Why mentoring?
One snowy morning this winter, I went outside to find my neighbor spinning the wheels of her car. She was trying to back out of the driveway, but there was so much snow behind her, that she was struggling and concerned she wasn't going to make it. She was stuck and getting frustrated.
From my perspective I could see her wheels and the snow. I used my arms to direct her, told her to pull forward this way, then turn the wheel and step hard on the gas. After a few attempts and directions, she was on her way. She rolled down the window and smiled. "I guess all I needed was a coach."
She has driven in the snow for years. She knows how to drive in the snow. But, the perspective of someone outside of the car was invaluable to her. It got her unstuck much faster. She did the driving, but the instructions were priceless...
That is what mentoring offers...the perspective of someone outside of you and instructions of what to do. The mentor requires accountability and is someone to report to in order to make progress. Stop just spinning your wheels and come mentor with me.
